What is the lesson?

One word:  Expectation

Let me explain:

The order system has just sent you three emails.  One is your invoice, the second has your unique username and password and the third is an invitation for you to accept some additional tips I’d like to send you but you will need to confirm you want the additional tips.  Just follow the instructions in that email 😉

Keep an eye out for emails from “Kevin (Email Delivery)”.  When you get your login details (which should be within 5 – 10 minutes depending on your email provider and how many emails they are trying to process right now) you will be able to login at the URL that is in the email or by using the form on this page.

I expect that, you expect that.  Especially as this training is all about improving your email delivery and I should be having no problems … Right?

Here’s a fact I learned a long time ago.  Sod and his damned ‘law’ frequently bite all email marketers on the butt, including me. This means that there is a small chance that your welcome email could end up in the spam bin (See what I mean about irony?) even though I know I have ‘ticked all the right boxes’ and done all the technical stuff to prove I’m a legitimate email sender.

What The ****.  Why?

You’ll discover the real reason behind the reason in the introductory lesson on the inside.  But the short version is it’s all about relationships.

Let me explain.

You have never received an email from this domain before.  For all I know you could be into knitting.  The majority of the emails you normally get could all be about knitting and as a result, your email company might decide for you (bless them …. grrr) that your welcome email is … unwanted.

So … Your first lesson is to …

Manage the expectations of your customers and contacts and help them get what they have asked for.  Give your customers and contacts a page like this that tells them to look in their spam bin if they don’t get the email they expect.

The next thing you should do is provide a set of useful instructions that clearly show and explain to your customers and contacts how they can whitelist your emails so they can pass through the spam filters and get delivered.

Each email company and anti-spam filter allows you to do it in a different way.   It’s surprising how many people don’t even know what ‘whitelisting’ is or that you can ‘force’ your email company to deliver important emails.  Some people don’t even realize their email company are checking and filtering their ‘private’ emails :O – You’ll be helping them!
